This is a very good question. It made me think of my mom and me.

It may depend on the generation. Most first generation (like my mom) think that their personal lives are REALLY personal that no one may know about unless you are a really really close friend or a relative.

Some may think that business is only meant for doing business, no more - no less. "It was great doing business with you - Thank you - and come again."

OR it can be because they cannot express themselves very well in English. They probably do not mean to be rude or whatever...but all we can do is smile and/or laugh with them (even if it is you that they are laughing at/with).

For me, it all depends on my mood...if I'm in the social mood, then I'll talk but if not, I just say hi and do not give an eye contact.

Worst comes to worst, I say "Sorry - no English."

heehee
;-)

Maybe it's just that we, as Americans, can be a little intrusive. I'm not Asian in the least tiniest bit (I think), but even *I* think Americans are a bit nosy and feel they have a "right to know" the answer to all their questions. I'm a very outgoing person until it appears you're trying to get in my business. Then I clam up so tight, I expect to find a pearl the next morning.

Well, you have to try to remeber their history. They built the Great Wall of China to keep out Foreigners and Intruders. Strnagers weren't welcomed but treated badly. This has been an atribute of Asians for a while. Their history tells us about these things.

Have you seen how crowded Asia is? Privacy is probably a blessing for them over here.

Relax about the laughing. Its somewhat rude on their part, but don't be so insecure.

Wanna mess 'em up? Learn Chinese, and then when they say something, answer them in their own language.

since im asian i'll try to answer all your questions.. despite the fact that you're questioning why asians are so private.. its mostly because of the fact that we take you as a stranger... as a person selling a product we consider you to be the consumer and thats all... we prefer not to get ourselves into conservations... additionally we have a sense of insecurity with talking to other people of different races... last but not least half of us don't even speak english fluently enough because the baby-boom population is still dominant

Many Asian cultures revolve around honor and respect of their ancestors. Many times things are done to not show disrespect or dishonor in their actions, speech, business, etc.... Perhaps at that time they may have felt to say the wrong thing might offend and bring great shame.

Asian people are generally shy and meek when it comes to stranger especially foreigner. Don't get the wrong ideas, they are not being rude, that's the way they are. It also the same things why westerner/European people are more open, outspoken and conflicting in nature.

I'm not sure, but I know a lot of people who could take a page out of that book. There are some things that the world at large just doesn't need to know.

oh my God thank you so much for this question.
you are very right, this is true, very true. asians are extremely private people, who know the history behind it, but it sucks, i dont know if its part of their tradition or its part of their ignorance, and not america only they behave like this all over the world.
