I always wondered this too. My old boss had a masters in etomology (bugs) and he told me: when a bug dies it loses water, this causes the legs to curl, flips it over on it's back. Spiders and most insects will do this.

most insecticides destroy the nervous system of the bug and they flip trying to regain their equilibrium.

because if they were alive, they'd get off their backs. when they're dead they're SOL.
