My father is a veteran from WWII and he gets medical but little help from the government. I do not believe that they are treating them the way they should be treated. In my father case he is sometime used as a Guinea Pig and I do not like that. Other cases have I heard about say they have a hard time getting their benefits. So answer to your question no they do not get help in a timely manner and the VA does need a overhauled big time. Also, I believe they should get all of their medical including their medicines free of charge. After all they do the work for most of us in the wars. They put their life's on the line everyday for our freedom, why shouldn't they not be given free medical and medicines. Also the way they get treated by our government is very wrong. After all they do the work the government won't do, by try and stopping the war from coming home. These veterans do not get treated very well at all. Veterans should being given more then just a medical and medicine. They should get breaks on most things in our country. I am not saying this because of my father. He is 83 years old and does not have much time. But the young ones that are coming home now do need a lot help. Like a place to live, help on getting jobs, things like that you know etc.....

I think that that if they come back disabled they will never be back to when they were 100%, unless they get some major education. I work with disabled people everyday and see how they went from having so much to having so little. What's different about the vets is that once the military discharges them out it's the VA's responsiblility to take care of them Today in the news it said how the VA is requesting more money. Well, after that tragic violation of HIPPA, loss of laptop...they are going to be needing some extra money to compensate for those damages. I also heard that somewhere in the area of 5x is the unemployment rate of recent military separatees to the national average. In some instances it is said that it can take a vet 6 months to a year to find employment. And when they say employment, they didn't say whether it was gainful employment or not. As far as VA medical care I think the VA in some locations are better than others. I have experienced bad and good ones. Everytime I talk to military personnel i always emphasize education. The military will pay for almost all a service members college education, so why not use them for that if anything??? Coming out into the workforce with no degree after leaving the military in the current economy is unfortunately disastrous. The worst thing i have absolutely heard about veterans is this: if a service member has reported any adjustment issues for mental health, gets treated and recovered, he may not be let back in the military because of that!!! And this is the military that is doing this not not the VA. The military tells soldiers to get help if they are having any type of mental issues like anxiety, depression resulting from war, but when they try to go to a special school ie; flight medic etc., or come back into active duty, they have been denied the speciality school and reentry back into the military. So then they have been screwed by the miltiary twice!!! Once for service related PTSD and second for trying to come back in to be gainfully employed again. the military needs to take better care of their veterans and leave the healthcare to the VA.

The VA took care of my father up until he passed away at the ripe old age of 86. So I have no complaints in that regard. They are however a government agency so waste is rampant. Also when you have employees that you can't get rid of then that is also a problem. I would like to see more business practices and controls like the civilian sector injected to help it run more efficient so more funds are diverted to the veterans.

Military medicine, especially in rehab from trauma and also in prostectics is second to none. However, the government can forget about some veterans, since many, many homeless persons are also veterans. However, VA hospitals are good and the VFWs are a great way for veterans to interact and share experiences, and by thanking vets ourselves, we honor and remember their service and sacrafice on our behalf.

My Husband is one of those Vets, and NO, they do not get the benefits they should get, especially when it comes to Healthcare at the VA,you can forget them.
We had to get separate Healthinsurance,'cause if he waits to be seen at the VA,he will drop dead first .
It takes forever for these guys just to get an appointment, and then ,once they get in there, they can't get the proper tests they need.
IT'S A NIGHTMARE !!!

i don't know to much about the current system but i do know many vets from vietnam who got treated like pariahs, from EVERYONE, and that was so messed up, i hope by now they have changed some of the policies, but i bet u they still don't get half of what they deserve...our priorities are *** backwards in the US, we pay outlandish amounts of money to athletes and actors...that says a lot in itself.
