If between Dallas and Houston I would choose Dallas, but that is such a personal choice.... If you widen your Texas search Austin and San Antonio are maybe better choices depending on what you are looking for.

Here is a statewide run down:
Houston and Dallas are big metropolitan areas if you want a big city, go to one of them. Austin and San Antonio are not small, but they are much smaller than Dallas/Houston.
The Latin population is larger in San Antonio and Houston than Dallas and Austin (since Miami also has a large Latin population this may be a factor to you.)
All 4 cities are friendly places to live

Dallas vs Houston only-
Both cities are comparable on most levels. Dallas is more 'cosmopolitan' than Houston. Houston is more laid back. Dallas felt a little more materialistic. Dallas is more segregated. The alternative lifestye crowd is bigger in Houston. Dallas has zoning and planning, Houston has none. Houston is dead flat. Dallas is slightly more rolling. (that is relative though, Austin is very rolling) Dallas is close to many nice lakes (some of those beaches are better than the coast) Dallas is HOT in the summer, but Houston is HOT and HUMID (which is way way way worse(of course I am sure you are used to some humidity being from florida)). Dallas gets ice storms and tornadoes and once every few years snow, Houston gets flooding, tropical storms, hurricanes, occasional tornadoes, and once in 20 years a snow, PS last time they said it snowed I personally wouldnt count it, as it was more like visible rain, since as soon as it touched down it melted. School systems are comparable, both citys have schools to avoid and schools that excel. (mainly city schools, vs suburb schools). People in both cities are relatively nice. Houston has a higher immigrant population, AND many New Orleans escapees are still living in Houston, I have heard making jobs more scarce, but I left Houston last year before Katrina hit so I wouldn't know first hand on that.

I will never move back to Houston, Dallas I would. (again personnal taste)

Texas Beaches - Donot be fooled you will be major dissappointed in Texas beaches being that you are from a place with great beaches. the water along the texas coast is filled with Mississippi river silt. If you put your hand in the water you cannot see it by the time you get your elbow in the water. I am not exagerating, it is that full of silt. the further towards Mexico you go the cleaner the water gets, but be warned there is no comparrision to Miami beaches.

I'm not going to give you an opinion on which one to live in just let you make up your own mind, with the following information.

Houston: Has nite life in the downtown area and Richmond strip.
Also the weather is better than Dallas only in the way that is does not snow there. It's hot and Humid. Houston is only 30 mins from the beach, 4 hrs to gamble in Casino's in La.

Dallas: Has nite life as well, it's growing faster than anywhere right now and is about the same in price. It's hot in the summer and freezes during the winter, darn cold. Lots of activity, lots of driving.

So, just pick one. The people are different in both places.

Houston by far is the best. Dallas is full of stuck up plastic cowboys and wanna be business types. They think theyare better than anybody else in Texas (ecspecially Houston). Clearly, Houston is better than Dallas as it has 800,000 more people than Dallas. Dallas is now the 3rd largest city in Texas, as San ANtonio has passed up piss poor crap *** Dallas as well. Austin is ok San Antonio is nice, Houston has cheaper cost of living. Dallas is a pit.

I agree with everyone else...Austin is a VERY COOL CITY! It is by far the prettiest and hippest place I have been to in TX. However, it is not the cheapest! Houston is the cheapest...the cost of living is much lower than in other major cities in the US, and there is lots to do here! However, the weather really, really sucks. The summer (which lasts from April to late November) is humid and hotter than hell. We have no fall to speak of, and very little winter. Austin's weather is not a whole better in the summer, but there are lots of lakes around...they help you cool off!

I guess it just depends on what you are looking for...

I have lived in several places so I feel I can adequately answer this. I lived in Houston and have property in Dallas, however I would prefer to live in Austin hands down! I live in Seattle now and love it (but very high cost of living) and people say Austin is like a small Seattle. It has a great nightlife (6th Street), a huge local arts scene (music, theater, painting etc), great weather, relatively low cost of living and it's best feature (to me) Matthew McConaughey!!!

They are both affordable and have great nightlife's. San Antonio is also a little more affordable and has some nightlife (but more geared toward tourists). Might also look at what you can do for a living because enjoying nightlife is not easy in a city if you can't work., unless of course you're playing with daddy's or sugar daddy's money.

I grew up in Houston and lived in San Antonio due to my husband's military career. I would move back to San Antonio in a heartbeat. Its a nice city, smaller than Houston. There is plenty to do and see. Houston is very crowed, lots of traffic but i can deal with it since i grew up there. When we retire from the military we are going to buy a home in Boerne or New Braunfels.

Houston has both. Very affordable and a lot of places to go at night. Look it over because lifestyles vary a lot with where you live.

Austin and San Antonio area is much better than Dallas or Houston. There is plenty to do and you don't have to travel as far to do it.
