Why do people ride diamond frame bikes?

I don't understand why people ride regular diamond frame bikes when recumbents are so much more comfortable and efficient. Please can someone tell me why they aren't more popular?

Diamond frames are cheap to make and buy. They are much lighter and slightly more manoeuvrable in traffic, and easier to store when not in use.
Recumbents do not allow you to use your own body weight, as the sitting on the seat removes that possible component from pedalling action,
(i.e. when you could stand on the pedals on a conventional bike). Most people feel very vulnerable when sitting so low in traffic.
Car drivers also do not expect to normally encounter these machines in the normal course of a day, due to their rarity.

Recumbents in European countries are primarily associated with people who suffer from a physical disability that would prevent them from riding a "conventional" bike.
This unfortunately is a big mark against any perceived "cool" image of these machines.

However, where there is a will, there is a way.
