I must say I find it truely amazing how many ppl answer directly from thier a55e5. The kid above who seems to think nVidia cards are made for gaming and ATI cards are not.. is really not too bright. This question can only be answered after you provide more info. First off, what PC do you have? Motherboard/chipset/RAM specs would help. Secondly, how much do you want to spend? Third: what do you want to be able to do with this card?
Provide a bit more info and I can surely point you in the right direction. Feel free to msg me.

And for the record...I have an ATI Sapphire Radeon X1800XT 256mb overclocked to 690/1600 that will out-bench a nVidia 7900gt 512mb on FEAR or Oblivion any day of the week.

It depends on what your needs are. What type of slot do you have for it (AGP, PCI, or PCI Express)? How much money are you wanting to spend? What specific requirements do you have for it? There are usually 2 methods of finding new hardware: either you set a dollar limit and find the best card you can for under that amount of money, or you identify a set of specific requirements (like it must be a PCI card, must have "x" amount of memory, must support hardware T/L, etc.) and then try to find the cheapest card you can that supports those requirements.

That being said, I recently got an ATI Radeon 9250 PCI card with 256 MB of RAM, and it's run great. I can run Star Wars Battlefront 2 on it with no glitches at all, and that's a fairly intensive game. It's under $100 - I think if you look around, you can probably get it for about $70.

budget graphic cards are on the rise at the moment as vendors are concentrating on pci-e cards ,its a ideal time to buy a powerful agp card
bottom range cards start at £30 for the radeon 9250..9550,and ge-force 4,and fx 5500
these are quite good if you just play the odd game but for a better card still in the budget range try a g\f 6200,,radeon x600,radeon 9800se or at just over £100 a radeon x600xt,a very good card(recommended by a mate)
good luck

need a little more info about your PC...Does it have an AGP port, or PCI ports? How much video memory do you need? Are you a gamer, if so, a budget card is not what you are looking for. Check Newegg.com for comprehensive list of cards at all price/performance levels.

Check out http://www.newegg.com

They have reviews, so when you look at a card that should work in your system, you can see if that cheap one has followers.

I like video cards with an NVIDIA chipset.

who ever recomended ATI for gaming is wrong (yes its true it works but not as well as NVIDIA)

ATI graphics cards are better for graphic designs(those sort of programs)
NVIDIA are best for gaming as they are only designed for gaming)

So if you are looking for a simple graphics card (not for gaming) use ATI but if you really want to do alot of gaming go for NVIDIA
