You use a strong program like GNU PGP. If you want to understand how it really works you have a lot of reading ahead of you.

simple encryppting might be only to substitute a letter with another letter like, a = z, b = y, etc. More advanced computer-based encrypting involves complex algorithm often including big number prime factorization (due to the complexness of, say, priming 1 654 531 465 731 656 815 761 656 234 314).

You simply apply an algorithm that has a simple key that is hard to discover. You then provide that key to your friend who can use it to decipher your text. An example might be: Convert every letter to a number that you decide. E.g. A=26, Z=1 and then replace all letters with those numbers. Of course you might want to opt for a more complicated algorithm to make it harder to decipher :)
