Dr. Stephen William Hawking (born 8 January 1942), CH, CBE, FRS, is considered one of the world's leading theoretical physicists. Hawking is the Lucasian Professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge (a post once held by Sir Isaac Newton), and a fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.

Despite enduring severe disability and, of late, being rendered quadriplegic by motor neurone disease (specifically, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's disease), he has had a successful career for many years, and has achieved status as an academic celebrity.

His name is Stephen Hawking. He is the pre-eminent and best known theoretical physicist in the world today. He has been based at the University of Cambridge in England for many years...an extraordinary thinker who's written several wonderful books about the universe. George Bush should get Hawking's opinion on global warming instead of his personally appointed puppet scientists. He might learn the truth.

There will probably never be another Einstein, but Hawking is the closest thing we have right now.

Stephen William Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 (300 years after the death of Galileo) in Oxford, England. His parents' house was in north London, but during the second world war Oxford was considered a safer place to have babies. When he was eight, his family moved to St Albans, a town about 20 miles north of London. At eleven Stephen went to St Albans School, and then on to University College, Oxford, his father's old college. Stephen wanted to do Mathematics, although his father would have preferred medicine. Mathematics was not available at University College, so he did Physics instead. After three years and not very much work he was awarded a first class honours degree in Natural Science.

A cosmologist, a theoretical physicist, a college professor. An extremely intelligent man. He has been attacked by a degenerative illness that has put him in a wheel chair and he isn't able to speak so he had to create a digital device that lets him use a single hand to speak. He has written some groundbreaking and existence rattling papers and a very popular book titled "A Brief History of Time". He is credited with proving the existence of black holes using logic and then gathering the empirical data to back it up.

One of the few heroes left. His official website.
