please somebody help give me some information on like terms

here you may be speaking of equalities?? I.e. the term 3+1 is like the term 2+2 in that they both equal 4, therefore; 3+1=2+2...if you want more info, you should be more specific.. like, if 2a=b+c to solve for a you must know more, say b=3 and c=1, then b+c=4.. Then you have 2a= 4.. You can then ssolve for a. by dividing both sides by 2, the sides stay equal and a=4/2 which is 2, so a=2...It doesnt get any harder than that, the numbers may get harder to manipulate but stay cool, and it'll come to ya

a + a = 2a

They are like-terms.

xy + xy = 2(xy)

This is taught in pre-algebra classes in middle school. Very very basic math.
