I work with a girl who has just gone off on maternety leave and is expecting to return in 6 months working with me as normal only today i found out that she will get her job back but may be moved to a different area working with someone else! they have put someone with me to work with (only for cover till she came back we thought) but it now turns out it may be permanent!! we have worked together for 2 years and become really great friends i hate the thought of this happening and want to tell my work mate but other people at work are telling me not to she only has 3 weeks left till her babys dew i would want to not tell her till after the babys born but i do want to tell her as soon as i can as i know shell be gutted as much as me, what would you do?

it depends what company policy is. The company reserves the right to move you when you come back from maternity if you are not coming back to do EXACTLY what you were doing before. ie if she was full time before she went and comes back part time they can give her something different to do. However as i said a lot of it depends on the individual company. i would ask her what she thimks is happening and guage what she's been told before saying anything. It could cause problems for you if she gets upset and tells them you've given her the information.

Sounds like the company is trying to do her wrong. It is illegal to take away someone's job while they are on maternity leave yet I know it happens all the time. Until people start to stand up for pregnant women, it will continue. Sounds like they will try to change her job to force her out. If they do, she has a legal case against them and should waste no time looking into it.

No don't tell her she has enough on her plate already, You never know her feelings about returning to work may change after her child is born so why worry her unnecessarily. She can deal with that if and when it happens.
