DDR is always the best! Board games would work, too. Make a theme for the party and the follow with that. If it's dance-themed, have dancing contests, play DDR, etc. If it's movie themed then play movie charades, buy Scene-It (a board game with a DVD that quizzes you on movies), watch a movie and break out the popcorn! Choosing a theme will make it a lot easier.

It has been ages since I was a pre-teen and times have changed. But, pre-teen parties are similar to any other party - music, refreshments, dancing, socializing, and on occasion a movie (or two) and video games.

I recommend the following:
(1) make sure that you have a well stocked refrigerator or have ordered enough pizzas
(2) make sure that you have extra toilet paper
(3) rent an electronic game system (unless you have one) and Dance Dance Revolution (or a similar game)

There are tons of stuff to do with preteen girls. You could have a scavenger hunt if you are looking for outdoor ideas. If you are looking for something inside you could get some jewelry making kits and let them string beaded bracelets and necklaces. Or, you could let the girls paint each other's fingernails and toenails.

The celebration
Following are some handy tips for a cracking preteen party:

Depending on the season, your child may like to invite friends to an out-of-home activity, such as swimming, ice-skating, or a picnic in the park.
For at-home parties, sleepovers can be popular at this age - but keep guests to a manageable number. Boys may be happier with a simple afternoon of video games. Check with other parents first what games they allow their kids to play. Your child will have fun selecting party entertainment, such as games to play and videos to watch, but bear in mind what is appropriate for their age.
With the days of 'pass the parcel' and 'statues' over, more sophisticated games will be required for preteen parties. Try a pop and movies quiz, with a prize for the child or group who gets the most answers right. Do your research when writing the questions - a quiz on Phil Collins, ACDC and the Beatles is not likely to go down well! Visit popular websites and watch programs like Top of the Pops to get up to speed with the latest stars.
At this age your child may like to offer more sophisticated food, with a few different courses. For recipe ideas, visit the BBC Food website. Your child can have fun helping you prepare the food a day or two in advance. A more unusual birthday cake may be appreciated.
Older preteens may prefer to simply 'hang out' with their friends. Suggest a trendy cafe they could meet in for lunch. You and your partner could sit at a separate table, to give them space to chat.
Goody bags are likely to be considered passé - so no need to worry about having them!
