Nationalism is a way for a disimiler group of people to bond together for common purposes. The good or evil of nationalism is purely a function of the quality of the leadership of a given nation.
For the world it is a good thing. People are overwhelmed if they attempt to solve all of the worlds problems. Nationalism allows people to bite off a smaller chunk of the pie and actually cause real positive effects to happen. A poor leader can bring shame on a nation and thus be a strong stimulis for positive change.
A great example is the US until recently. We have been able to absorb peoples from around the world. Different cultures and values yet glue all of these various factions together for a common purpose and core set of values. The strong work ethic has allowed us to build an industrial base that has never been rivaled in history. It has helped us become the greatest military power in history and to be a mostly benign influence on the world as well. The fading of nationalism in the US over the last 40 years has seen a serious decline in US Military, economic and industrail abilitiy. Scientific advances are drying up where the US used to be the driving force in scientific research. Our ability to aid forign nations is coming to an end. We just plain cannot afford to continue to send so much money overseas. Our economy is on the verge of collapse. All of these the primary or a major factor is the decay of US Nationalism. We have exported our jobs overseas. We have allowed ourselves to be invaded by peoples who hate our nation. We have seen far too much of what the US used to be disapeer in the last 40 years. A pervasive "global" view has dilluted our ability to do anything productive in the world.

Nationalism is what keeps countries intack. Without it a country falls apart because it has no foundation or even determination to substain itself. For the world nationalism is a good thing. For a country like the United States it is definately good but this country lacks it to a certain degree. I know in some parts of the country it is very strong but for a state like california, where i am from, a significant portion of the population in this country, it is very weak. I dont know about other states but here, if I ask someone what they are, noone will respond I am an American. You will get answers like I am mexican, or asian, or black or white even..If I asked 10 people here what they were I'd be surprised if 1 said they were American. So I think nationalism is good and I also think America needs more..tell me about other parts of the country please because I guess all I can confidently say is California significantly lacks nationalism,

Historically speaking, nationalism was good for a period of time. However, nationalism might prevent us from progressing as a species. We need to get over profiteering and the whole nation, race, gender, and tribal god aspects of society. The only way to truly progress is to work together as a people of the world not just a region of the world.

There was a time in the USA when being proud to be an American was the norm. If you say that now you are laughed at. Most people think of Nationalism as NAZI's, but it was actually nationalism that helped us beat the Germans (i.e. Rosie the Riveter). It is a good thing, but we must listen to our leaders and make up our own mind. Not follow them over a cliff!

Nationalism is a good thing only while your in your home country. It is good to take pride in your country, but not to think your better than everyone else because that's the place of your origin. In national politics, go with your gut instinct. The opinions and ideals of the "crowd" and the government can sometimes be misleading.

Nationalism breaks down societies eventually into tribal units constantly competing or worse aiming for annihilation of the other subset. So, I think it is a negative influence leftover from the Napoleonic Wars and is still in motion but is a devastating all efforts of peace and co-existence.

Nationalism forces people into the mistaken belief that there is some kind of difference between "them" and "us", and "we" are better than "they" are.
Whether that is good or bad, depends on your ultimate goal. If you want one group of people to dominate another group of people, it works great, and therefore is "good".
If you want people to get along with each other, and treat one another as brothers and sisters, it doesn't work, and is "bad".
So until you define your goal, there is no way to determine what is good or bad.

Better than the alternatives, better than what existed before nations, but it is simply a stop along the way to something better.
