Because both when you are speaking and when you are singing you are mimicing the voice that taught you. If the voice that taught you had an accent, so will you.

You don't lose it, everyone sounds the same when singing.
When you grow up in America, you hear people sing (Americans) and assume that only Americans sing like that because you don't hear an accent.
Same goes for British people, even though they have an accent their singing is the same to them.
It is because we all sound the same during singing, and everyone assumes just their culture sounds like that, when everyone does when they sing. Everyone.

In the UK singers often gain an American accent.
But it is good to hear the Arctic Monkeys singing with a Sheffield accent

Because when people sing they imitate the original singer, they try to sing like them in everyway, like voice tones and pitch and the way they say the words, and the accent accordingly.

According to a singing teacher i know, if you are singing properly you should have no accent at all. Hmmmmmm mysterious! and dull at the same time. Wow.

i dunno, that's a good question. but i noticed summat. when girls sing, you can't really hear they're accent at all. but when dudes sing - like coldplay, sex pistols, ect.- you can really ear they're accents. it like, gets heavier.
