Not exactly trivia, but here goes. I carry a pen with me if I need to sign something (useful for credit card purchases) or fill out a form of some kind. However, if I'm writing free form, I would prefer a pencil as I have a tendency to skip letters and/or words when I'm writing what I'm thinking.

For everyday use, probably a pen.
For drawing, I usually go for the pens and use the pencil mostly to sketch with.

pencil even though i hated them until i was allowed to use pens in school and now it's been 4 years and i'm kinda sick of pens

Pens. I love purple pens. I always use pens because pencils are harder to push and they smudge, especially if you are a lefty. Pens are the best for crossword puzzles.
