Ask a mechanic or check Kelly Blue Book values on used cars by several manufacturers...I love the Honda engines. Your question is kind of hard to answer because you don't include type (sports, sedan, coupe, SUV.etc), price range, or purpose of car. Honda and Toyota are known and established for long-lasting engines cores. Unfortunately, I'm no fan of any American models, unless you are shopping for a pick up truck or a luxury automobile.

It depends somewhat on how you will use it, your budget, etc, but I think the very best cars for the money, for most people, most of the time are: Honda Civic, Honda Accord, Acura TSX, Acura TL, Toyota Camry, Toyota Avalon, Mazda 3.
