I do not think there can be found a single instance in history where hate was a positive thing. Wherever there is hate, there is it's opposite. It is the latter that champions the change of heart for humanity, not the former. I suppose a strict sophist might argue then, that one cannot have positive change without hate, because it motivates good people to rise against it. However, I would argue that hate needn't exist only to arouse the good will and intentions of humanity. Conversely, love, or goodwill does not exist merely as an antedote to hate. If one were to utilize pure hate to it's logical conclusion, it is a suicidal path.

Hate has had a positive effect many times in world history. Without hate, wars against misguided peoples or evil tyrants cannot succeed. What if people had not hated the divine rights of monarchs, slavery, fascism, Soviet style communism, American apartheid in the south, the war in Viet Nam etc? We call hate a "negative" emotion, because it's never pleasant. But it is sometimes necessary. Those who say hate is never positive, have never faced the type of situation where it is unavoidable.

Hate can never be a positive force for anything, but that doesn't mean that hate hasn't played a very important part in many great things that have happened. In North America there were some people who hated to see the effects of slavery and they did what they could to change things by sheltering escaped slaves, teaching literacy, and welcoming fugitives to their communities and churches. these were all good things, hate played a role, but none of the good things were caused by hate.

Durring the American Revolution, the founding fathers hated what the British did to them, and fought a war of indipendence, forming the now great country of the United States of America. Hate was a positive thing.

I don't think hatred has ever helped a nation overcome an oppressive government or helped a collection of individuals rise up and save thousands. Hatred or vengeance is never a cause for celebration.

I think that you might be mistaken when you say hate. A more appropriate term would be "right". Because it is every person's right to have freedoms and happiness, they may feel hate, but it is never used as a "fuel" for justice.

Hate or hatred is an emotion of intense revulsion, distaste, enmity, or antipathy for a person, thing, or phenomenon. It is generally attributed to cause a desire to avoid, restrict, remove, or destroy the hated object.

The emotion is the opposite of love.

How could it ever be considered a "positive thing"?

Hate is positive in history in the aspect of looking back we can learn from how destructive, ignorant and usually self seeking that hate is.

Also, I disagree that hate is the opposite of love, they seem to be two sides of a passion coin. The opposite of love is indifference in my opinion. And indifference is also destructive.

How do you define hate? Does "hate" mean a value opposed to your own? Does the fact that someone is a envangelical christian mean that they "hate" gays? Or if someone is for separation of church and state does that mean they "hate' christians? Is the fact that Israel claims it is a "jewish" state means they hate Palestianians?

So to answer your question how can one describe the abstract like the word "hate?" Hate I think depends on your point of view.

Hate can be positive if one is hating negative things. Like I hate child molesters, murderers, thieves and evil people.
