Check the engine oil level. If it's high, and, no one added any oil, you probably have a leaking carburator float needle and seat.
The gas in the carburator overflows into the intake, make it's into the cylinder, past the rings, and dump into the crankcase raising the level of the oil by mixing with it.

If the oil level is OK, then someone may have added kerosene or diesel to the gas by accident.

Also check the throttle control. If it has a choke, it may be stuck in the closed possition.

Also check the air filter, if it's plugged, or saturated with gas or oil it will not let enogh air into the engine.

sounds like the motor has burned out, yes you are screwed. a tip for the future when cutting long grass with an electric mower always lift one side at an angle to ease the work load on the motor :))

My lawn mower also smoke a little when I start it. Nothing to worry about. It's just burning off excess oil. As long as it runs, it's good.

Just a thought, check the air filter. If the smoke is black instead of white then a dirty air filter could be causing it to run rich (too much fuel.)

Here's the main answer..... never lend stuff out...

If its white, its oil...... if its black, its too much fuel.

I'd make sure it wasn't overfilled with oil first, I've seen some people not even check it and dump oil in.
