Well there are a wide variety of metal genres, here are a few.
My favorite band, Lacuna Coil ;], would be uh.. gothic metal, but they're sort of coming out now. They were on Ozzfest and there are a couple of videos of them on MTV Overdrive, so .. I always think that's never a good sign for an obscure band.
Lacuna Coil includes a female and male vocalist, and they're often compared to the bands Nightwish (symphonic and power metal) and Within Temptation (gothic metal), so you check out those if you're into the female vocalist thing.

I also like the progressive / power metal thing, so that includes Hammerfall and Edguy. There's this album called "Metal Dreams" that I would really love to have, but it was released in 1999, so I don't know if they have it anymore, but I love most of hte tracks in it, and it includes bands like: Hammerfall, Primal Fear, Pegazus, Pyogenesis, Love Like Blood, Lacuna Coil, Sinner, Amorphis, Narnia, Dismal Euphony, Sinergy, Hypocrisy, and others..
Jack Off Jill have broken up, but that chick is like restarting in a band called Scarling.
For a more black metal type thing, I don't really dig that stuff (Have you heard of Children of Bodom? I'm not really into them, but for people of the metal atmosphere, they're very well-liked..), but if I had to choose, I like Amorphis and Dimmu Borgir. But they've like.. been around for awhile. I like Chrome Division, but they've just barely gotten out so they don't really have a lot of material

And uh.. the following are just bands from the sample CD that CM Distro sent me, mostly within the black / speed metal genre that you can check out (all pretty obscure):
Aeon, At War, Beneath the Massacre, Black Harvest, Chain Collector, Endstille, Excalion, Falkenbach, Gianlauca Ferro, Hacavitz, Hurtlocker, In-Quest, Miscreation, Niden Div. 187, Nomans Land, Order of Nine, Paylface, Sadist, Paul Speckman, Spiders & Snakes, Sweet Cobra, Sword, Torn WIthin, Valas, Vile, Vanquished, Wetwork, Woods of Ypress, Zed Yago, Celtic Frost, Threat Signal, Soilwork, Kataklysm, Scar Symmetry, Hypocrisy, Sonata Artica, Catherdal, Exodus, All Shall Perish, Agnostic Front, One Man Army, Terror 2000, Gorefest, and Communic..

You can check out purevolume for all kinds of bands, but www.cmdistro.com sells lots of obscure metal bands' merchandise.

I highly recommend "Underoath" It is my favorite metal group.
And Emo music is good too. Its more soft than metal. But extremely good. Try listening to "armor for sleep", "matchbook romance", and "panic at the disco". Look for the song "car underwater" by armor for sleep and "the truth about heaven" by armor for sleep. Those are GREAT songs.
