You may have heard the phrase, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing." Those people who answered with an unequivocal "Yes." miss a very salient point. It is not the book or its contents that make one smart. It is in the application of knowledge that demonstrates how smart someone is.

Having book learning, stored up as trivia in ones memory is only useful in playing games and for fooling others into the illusion of wisdom

BTW, a truely smart person will learn from other sources than books. One learns a lot from listening to others, from observation, from experimentation, from nature and from failure.

Smart people usually want to read books. If you want to "get smarter", anything of value that you read (books, newspapers, magazines) will increase your knowledge. I really doubt that reading romance novels makes you smarter, though!

Depends on the books you read, I don't think that reading "Captain Underpants" raises your IQ.

Reading makes you hotter.
