In 1935 a patent was issued for a vehicle that used water as a fuel. In 1965 the US Army showed the vehicle of our future. It used water as a fuel. Some form of this vehicle is now being purchase by the US Army. It will take several years for similar vehicles to be made available to the public. The mission is to get everyone to drive 55 mph and the speed limit or a safe speed if below that so we can reduce our use of fuel and break our "addiction to oil." Aircraft can fly slower by 20% and save at least that much in fuel consumption. It will save lives at home and in the "war." We have NOT had this technology for many years because big business and politicians could make big money by selling oil. It is time for a change. The power is in the hands of the people when they are informed. The media should be on top of this. It is their job! HELP ! GOD BLESS AMERICA

Exxon, Chevron, BP, Arco will never let that happen. there is too much money to be made in the industry, DuPont laboratories long ago created a carburetor that was capable of 50 miles per gallon and Exxon bought the patent (everything is for sale for the right price) and put it under wraps. We can put a man on the moon but we cannot utilize a better engery for vehicles? Gasoline combustion loses about 80% of its energy in an internal combustion engine leaving only 20% for motion (thanks chem class) The same reason satellites and spaceships can run for 10 years without a new battery but our cars and remotes need new ones every 6 months, the allmighty dollar dictates our lives.

This is an excellent question, and I wish I had a good answer. I read an article in the newspaper the other day that stated "If everyone drove the Speed Limit, the U.S. would save 8 million gallons of gas a DAY!" Unfortunately, the only ways to get people to slow down is speed traps. It would take a lot of police (that communities can't afford) or electronic speed traps that record speed and license plate #s (again very cost prohibitive) to do this. I don't know what else can be done. Most people are gonna speed as long as they can get away with it. Maybe when gas is $4-$5 a gallon, they'll try to conserve more, but it'll be too late then.

the technology is relatively simple. a tamper proof governor installed into a vehicle while being assembled would assure that, that particular vehicle could not speed. Have the government pass a law that will force everyone else to retrofit their vehicles, under threat of seizure. you don't comply, you lose the car.
It would make police pursuits a little boring though, when the cops can't go any faster than the crooks and the crooks can't go fast enough to outrun the cops.
Bringing the speed limit down to 30 miles per hour will save thousands of lives every year.

Getting people to drive slower is not a good answer (not realistic) unless you mean they should drive 65 instead of 80mph. Remember that time is money, and while YOU may not be in a hurry to get somewhere, YOUR decision to drive slowly affects everyone behind you, which means that you inconvenience others. It would be alot better of people would buy more fuel efficient cars which can go 65 or 75, still get us to work on time, but still use alot less gas.

Put devices on all vehicles that will not allow them to go over a certain speed. Slowing people down and saving gas!

In my opinion, we will never get people to drive any slower than they are made to. Also, while that helps, it is not enough. We need to find alternatives to gasoline engines.
