2 ideas:
1) pull gently on the shank, just enough to put pressure on the internal workings and turn the dial until you feel the shank "give" a little, then move on to the next number, DON'T forget to WRITE down the numbers AS you FIND them.
2) Get a stethoscope, put it against the lock and start dialing numbers, listening for the mechanism to "drop into place". DON'T forget to WRITE down the numbers AS you FIND them.

There is a way to break the code...you might need an exceptional amount of time though. First you Start with 111111 then go on to 111112 then go to 111113 etc. until you have gone all the way through or you discover what the code is.
Good Question!

In the book "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman," he describes how he used to go about figuring out combinations to combination locks that are already open. If it's currently locked, get boltcutters.

Key locks are the only ones that can be "picked". Smarty.
You'll need to break it off or freeze it off.
Good luck...

Cut it off and replace it. Can't tell people how to do this as then everyone who sees it will know and there would be a rash of theft...
