I would go with Cobain, while he didn't create grunge (he said so himself) he definitely helped push it to the forefront of the musical scene. Before grunge was the 80's hair metal bands, Nirvana (and the grunge bands) helped change that trend. Bands like Nirvana were usually only played on independent radio stations or college stations. Early 90's how many people started wearing flannel and torn jeans? I think not directly, but Cobain and the grunge movement helped make some of the other lesser known genres of rock (punk, ska, later hardcore and emo) come to the front.

Smalls was certainly talented and popular but it could be argued that Puffy had more influence (his production style--the Bad Boy habit of "remixes") or even Tupac (more material, more themes and topics). I don't think Biggie had near the musical contributions that Cobain did.

Many many many more! Look at the music that inspired Kurt Cobain... Take a look at the Beatles, Zeppelin, Doors... To name a few. Rap IS NOT MUSIC!

kurt cobain, hugh talanted, master of writing lyrics, grunge creater + grunge ender. He take that back to his grave....I worship this guy.
