You obviously don't know anybody who has ever made a mistake, huh? I know a lot of people who have screwed up in life, and I even know some that did state prison time. How in the hell can you pay rent when you're worked like a slave-all day with no wages? Our prisons are so overcrowded right now, and some of the people there aren't a threat to society in any way. I can't even tell you how much this question bothers and offends me.

Yes and No, The ones only put there for a little while should have to pay for there espensive living. The others there to pay with their lives for crimes that deserve the death penalty should be put to death upon arrival at the prison. In America that is. Was a time that when you got caught murdering, raping or stealing a horse. You last vision was of the ground under the tree that held the rope choking the life out of you.

Yes they should but I doubt it will ever happen. I know a lot of people only get into trouble because they can live in prison for free and don't have to worry about the outside world. The government is so messed up. We would have a lot more people abide by the law if prison wasn't such an easy way out.

No, they shouldn't, because nowadays, prisons are very nice, and criminals get better treatment than they would outside. People who come from poor homes, especially would not want to leave, as they get three square meals a day, excercise rooms, tvs, and educational oppurtunities they wouldn't have elsewhere. Some people even attempt to get rearrested when they're released because their prison life was so much better. Also, if they didn't pay, the state would have to keep paying for their higher standard of living, and our country would go into even more debt. It simply wouldn't work.

The system knows they'll never leave if that was the case and the prisons would be more overcrowded than they are. So, they say "let the taxpayers pay it" . I hate that, but I don't see another alternative, so I guess we have to deal with it.

No. I think prison should be half punishment, and half prevention.
Prison should serve two purposes: punishment by denial of freedom to the outside world, and a restitude for criminals so they are not exposed to the world, in turn harming it.
If we were to make criminals lived in more civilized prisons, but keep them away from the general public, it would be more humane than keeping a regretful lifer in the pen with dangerous criminals who hold no feelings of repentance for their crimes.

alot of people go to prison because they have no money, or lost it in some way. people would be jailied for life if this were the case. also, there is something called bail, which allows you to pay your way out of prison if you are not at risk for flight.

I agree, I also feel they should be paying the victims of their crimes back with money they "earn". But the truth is it costs so much just to house them I doubt they could make enough to even begin to cover their own costs. :(
