Honestly, I do not have a problem with virus because I follow few simple rules that keeps me from getting them.

1. Update microsoft software frequently, especially security patches.

2. Do not download any executable or any script files unless you download it from a reliable source.

3. Use online free virus checkers like Housecall or even Microsoft's http://safety.live.com site. I find the online checkers are good enough and I don't have to pay annoying subscriptions.

4. Secure your network from worms and etc by putting your internal network behind a firewall.

And these guidelines have kept me from getting a virus on my computer for more than 20 years.

Almost all people who get virus on their computer get it by downloading infected programs or trojans that install the virus program, and when you, yourself, CHOOSE to download an infected program, neither a firewall or a virus scanner is going to help you (unless it's a virus scanner that actively does scans on all files in the background but that slows your computer down considerably).

And the rest get it through worms and scripts from websites. So don't feel too secure that you won't get a virus because you have a firewall and a virus scanner and also a virus scanner that's not updated is not going to help you much. You need to update them frequently. (That's why I suggest using free online versions, for the budget conscious.)

Bottom line, best hardware to stop virus? Your noggin.

hardware seems to be confusing here...u can get a hardware firewall but not an antivirus....if u have a router....then most routers have a built in firewall system...all u have to do is turn it on....also u can go for zone alarm which is a software firewall and very good....and as far as antivirus goes....avg is free and very good too....also u need a combination of antispywares too...e.g. spybot and spyware doctor

The best option is to degrade to a windows95 or windows98.
The new viruses concocted these days are targetted to infect Win NT/ XP because of their NTFS system file. Win95/ 98 uses FAT system file, so it will be less likely to get infected.

Spybot- Search & Destroy, is a nice way to get rid and warn of intruding viruses, you can download it free on their website (http://www.safer-networking.org/). Stay away from the big names like Symantec's Norton, they add a bunch of extras that the average computer user doesn't need, and they slow down your computer.
