HDs come with a 'shunt' jumper, a little rectangle block shaped that connects across two pins on the back of the HD next to the power connectors. HDs have (3) settings you can select, i.e. SLAVE, MASTER and CABLE SELECT. Your HD should have abbreviations molded in the case, SL, MS, and CS. Move the shunt jumper to the SL pins. This will require you open the computer case, remove the HD, move the jumper, reinstall the HD and reconnect your IDE and power cables. Be sure you make note of how the cables are connected to assure you realign the cables properly. Also, be sure your are grounded and do not touch the underside of the HD where are the electrical connections are. Static from your body can destroy the HD.
** If your HD does not have the abbreviations, go to www.maxtor.com and do a search for your particular HD model.

Usually all hds come with a jack at the back side (where the cables connect). You will be able to spot the jack connector and a simple picture explaining how the jack will convert the hd from master to slave mode. hope this helps.

You must open up your case and adjust the junper wires on the back of the HD. Look in your HD's manual for more the exact configuration.
