I was smoking pot for 11 years and have been quit for 3 months now and don't really want it. I don't like drinking but have been to help me relax and feel happy. I've even tried pills sold by people(not pharmacy or prescribed) like xanax and klonopins but i want to feel good on my own. what is wrong with me? What can I do to fix this?

You have to be goal oriented. If you have a goal then you will have a drive to accomplish. You also have to have confidence in yourself. You have to realize that you are very important and make a difference in the world. Every person on this planet is important, if one piece of the puzzle was missing it wouldn't be a complete puzzle. You have to instill in yourself that you have a tremendous role to play during your life. You have to start believing in yourself. It's not easy but eventually you will be successful. Sure, it's a lot easier popping pills or doing drugs but as we all know that no solution it's just pushing off the problem for another day. Sadly our society has glorified all these antidepressants and made them into a very normal part of life, just like taking a Tylenol to help a headache.
I will also suggest that you learn how to relax and just think positive. If you relax your body and mind then you will find yourself in a new state of mind. Sometimes people get into exercise. Exercise causes the brain to produce endorphins which is the body's natural amphetamine (feel good drug). You can feel healthier and better about yourself by doing this, plus have more energy to do other fun things as well. Also make sure you maintain a healthy diet as well. If you have some serious issues that need to be dealt with, see a psychologist and get that taken care of. Alcohol will only work temporarily and has a negative effect on the human body.

Most of all, keep your chin up. Find a hobby, perhaps painting or even sky diving - sometimes that adrenalin rush once in awhile is all you really need.

Well, after smoking pot on a regular basis for 11 years, you need to cut yourself some slack. Your brain is so used to having those mind-altering chemicals, and I'm sure became dependent on it for you to feel good. My best friend has been smoking for 6 years and is trying to wean herself off of it with the help of an anti-depressant called effexor and regular therapy, which seems to be working well for her. I know its disappointing because you want to be happy and normal without any sort of drug, but sometimes you just have to get over that and realize you need help. I am sure you probably have a chemical imbalance in your brain which is making you depressed. Either this was something inborn in you, and is what led you to the dependence on pot, or maybe it was caused by the long-term effects of using pot. Either way, I think it would be beneficial for you to not only be using the help of a physician or psychiatrist which can monitor you chemically with prescriptions, but also a therapist or psychologist 2-4 times a month. Talking to someone and working out your problems in therapy is shown to have long lasting effects on mental health. Sometimes it is hard to find a good psychologist that you really like and trust, but when you do it is really helpful, as I have experienced going for depression and anxiety. For awhile you may need drugs to help you get through this, and you have to realize that that is okay. If you go to therapy though, you will be able to change yourself and find new ways of coping and thinking, and eventually you may only need a really low dose of medication or none at all! Good luck.

By the way, if you can't find affordable therapy, or you don't have insurance, then join a support group. You can call your local hospital and ask them if they have or know of any support groups for people with depression or where MA (marijuana anonymous) meetings are held. These are free, and you will find that when you can talk to other people with similar experiences that you can relate to, it will make you feel so much better!

I can totally relate to your feelings. I have the same feelings toward my antidepressants. I've never done drugs like what you have mentioned, so this may sound strange. I hate the fact that I have to take antidepressants. When I miss them for a day or two, I really start to hate them. I want to feel good with out them!! happy, funny, myself! BUT I have finally come to a place where I believe I can be healed. I'm not a success story yet but through pray to Jesus Christ and belief of a healing, I'm getting there. I still take my medicine but know that one day I will be healed. This would work for you too, I'm sure of it. Try prayer, find a Christian support group. And don't feel bad if it is not an over night thing.

I agree with JLL. But it seems that since you smoked pot for so long you now have trouble getting in touch with your emotions without it, and NO DO NOT START AGAIN!!! Sorry, but I have to do that, sometimes. What you need is one of those find yourself vacations, and not a crappy weekender one either. I mean a week to a month or two vacation. Go somewhere you've never been, but have always wanted to go. Like Alaska if you wanted to go there or the UK. Wherever it is go there and stay there until you've felt happy and like you really accomplished a self satisfying goal.

I personally think taking recreational drugs is a form of escapism from the problems or everyday life you experience. I think the best way to feel happy without them is to set goals for yourself to make your life into what you'd like it to be and pay close attention to those goals. And if you feel tempted to do drugs then sit and think about how they fit in with your goals.

I also personally believe there is a lot of discrimination against those who use drugs recreationally, I mean if some people need these things prescribed and do other legal drugs on a daily basis, how do they really differ from those using "recreational drugs" to regulate mood and happiness. I also thought pursuit of life and liberty were constitutionally protected but heck there's lots of things about our govermental laws and actions that I don't understand.

i understand what you're going through... Basically, you just have to find things in life that are going to make you happy minus the bud. That's all you really want is a feeling of happiness. You should try concentrating on some of your favorite hobbies, maybe get other people involved. Try exploring new hobbies, find something great to accomplish, make more money... do anything that's positive and keep telling yourself that if you take the drugs then it's going to mess up what you're trying to do.
You need a good reason to stop. that's all...

I've asked myself a similar question so many times! Day to day life is just so staid!

My next Q is going to be searching for a reason to live - might be love, might be happiness, might be money - I know it's not god (been there done that) but I want something that's within my reach.

Who are these people who get "high on life" & what's their secret...? Maybe you have 2b one of the "beautiful people"... oh-oh... I feel a bit of Marilyn Manson coming on - oh well, at least it makes depression enjoyable for 5 minutes!

I would recommend learning meditation.
No mood-altering chemicals are involved, and it has been scientifically proven to reduce stress and increase relaxation. However, do not expect instant results, such as you would receive from smoking pot or a prescription. Given time, meditation can also increase both mental clarity and focus. Another plus, it doesn't cost anything. ;-)

It seems that your life lacks purpose so you fill the emptiness with drugs.

Why not follow the dream you had as a child. Doctor , Nurse, scientist.....whatever the case, apply for a grant for school & fill your head with somthing usefull so that you can make your own money & feel good about yourself . Maybe even make some upbuilding friends.
