No, you didn't make a BIG mistake; Macs can be fabulous machines, if they have good guts.
The picture problem is strange; QuickTime can open just about any image format, and from my experience, it can open many videos, too. The problem there might be that you don't have anything of that sort (QuickTime is a free download).
A slow computer often is a result of three things: insufficient memory/processing power, age, or too many programs running concurrently. If you bought your Mac new, then I would guess that it's a combination of your processor and open applications. I seem to recall X as a memory-intensive OS.
But I recommend that you tell this to the fellow at the Mac store. They will usually tell you stuff for free.

I hope that you can be patient through the transition because it's worth it, IMHO.
Within your Applications, Utilities, double-click on Terminal. Inside this terminal window type "tail -f /var/log/system.log" (without the quotes) then do the things that cause the lock-ups while watching those logs. You should consider calling Apple's tech support also to troubleshoot these. I have zero problems with my newer Mac Mini Duo Core.
How much RAM do you have installed? I hope at least 1GB.

1) viruses are caused by what comes into your computer, not by the type of computer you're on.
2) format your hard drive (save everything first, as the process will delete ALL
files)

macs don't have known viruses. (they have security holes but patched long ago.)
It could be your ISP.
Also, maybe your videos you received aren't properly formatted or contain exe files.
