Click the start menu, go up one to all programs, the top of the left column is accessories, go to system tools, and run the disk cleanup and disk defragmenter. It also helps to delete any unneeded files. You can take it places to have a more thorough job done, and it really does help, but not for long. If it's old enough, you may just want to buy a new one.

These are my ways of improving my computer's response time:

1. Empty all files in "Temp" folder. Those that are being used by some programs may not get deleted but the rest will.

2. Delete your history using IE or manualy deleting all contents from the "c:\Docs and Sett\user\Local Settings\history" folder for XP, maybe diffrent for different OS.

3. Get some good defragmenting software like Perfect Disk and defrag ur disk atleast every month. Heres a link where u can get the trialware.
http://www.raxco.com/products/downloadit/perfectdisk2000_download.cfm

4. Defragment your registry every 2 to 3 weeks if u install/uninstall too frequently.

5. And one of the most important tools, if u know what process does what is to disable certain Startup processes by running "msconfig" in your XP. This allows to save upto 8 to 12 seconds at startup even for a 2.66GHz P IV.For slower machines this gain may even be higher. Also the general post-boot usage is improved.

If you're running a Windows based system, the basic things to try are:

1. Update and run your antivirus software and then do the same with your anti spyware. If you don't have this, get it.

2. Next if you have installed and removed programs quite a bit, run disk defragmentation in your system tools. You can find this by clicking on the start button in the lower left hand corner of your screen and going to Accessories and then System Tools.

3. Next, if you're using Internet Explorer as a browser, clear your browsing history, cookies and temporary internet files by going to the "Tools" menu in the uppermost task bar on your browser, click on Internet Options (usually at the bottom of the menu) and Click on Delete History, then Delete Files, and then on Clear History.

Finally, empty your trash folder on your Windows desktop

After all this restart your computer. If it's not moving any faster, you may have a hardware problem or worse yet a virus that your antivirus software can't detect. You should then call the manufacturer's support center or your antivirus software manufacturer's support center for further assistance.

- check for viruses, use an antivirus AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/ ), Avast (http://www.avast.com/ ), or ClamWin (http://www.clamwin.com/ )
- check for spyware, adware, malware, and the likes. Use an anti-spyware/anti-adware Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ ), Spybot SD (http://www.safer-networking.org/ ), and Ewido (http://www.ewido.com/ )
- Uninstall unused programs. In Control Panel/Add or Remove Program
- Delete unused startup shortcuts, there are three place to check out: Startup Folder, Registry, and Services.
- Defragment regularly.
- Do a scandisk/ Disk Check.
- Never have too much fonts on font folder, it slows up startup, just install ones you use often, and ones that you often receive files in.
- Upgrade your CPU (if < 1Ghz), RAM (if < 512 MB) or Harddisk (if < 20GB)
- As a last resort, if nothing works. Reinstall Windows.
- As a double last resort, reformat the System Drive, then reinstall Windows.
