There are multiple possible reasons for creaking floors. We had and still have the problem to a lesser degree. I have a 2-story house; downstairs we have hardwood floors and upstairs we have carpeting on a plywood sub-floor. Our biggest problems are upstairs. A few years ago we had the upstairs re-carpeted and once they had taken up the old carpet but before installing the new, I went around with a portable electric drill and a bag of "deck" screws. In all the areas where there had been squeaking/creaking I put in deck screws to better attach the sub-floor to the underlying floor joists. That definitely helped, but didn't eliminate the problem. There was still bad creaking in a couple of spots near the walls. I discussed this with the foreman from the floor company doing the re-carpeting and he said that he thought that it had to do with the joists not having been attached properly at the ends to the house framing. I forget the details, but I know it was going to involve some serious construction work to fix it. So far we've been living with it. I did some web searching and found a few good sites that discuss the possible causes for creaking floors and how to fix them. I've put the links under "Sources" below. The last one ("Creak Killer") is a device you can use if you have access to the underside of the floor (in a basement for example) where it's attached to the joists.

Usually houses are nailed together. I had the same problem, things just work "loose" over time. You need to find the creaking areas and either hammer the loosy nails down or add and hammer more nails down. Since, I don't like revisiting things twice, I use screws to secure the unwanted noises. Chao !

There can be 2 reasons. For 1 when the people built your house they missed a lot putting your sub floor onto your floor joist, and the nails are squeaking as you walk. 2ND water damage will make floors weak and sag..now what you can do is go under your house and look if there's water damage. If there is do as the lady above answered. But if its nails there nutting besides ripping up the floor and doing it right.

Creaking like the house is settling, or creaking like creaky floorboards?

Hi Janie! I would contact the person who sold you the house (your realtor) and ask if they know of any good inspectors in your area. I highly suggest getting an inspector out there if you are worried about it, then they can tell you from there what needs to be done. Good luck!!
