The term chick flick is slang, often derisive, for a movie which is designed or considered to appeal mainly to women. While the term is relatively new, the concept of films designed to appeal specifically to women has existed since the beginning of film making, and has been known by several colloquial terms, including "women's pictures". Movies of this type generally focus on romance or relationships. Many romantic comedies, romance films, or films with many female characters (esp. if the main character is female) are labeled "chick flicks". Many films with a Cinderella-like theme (e.g. The Princess Diaries, A Cinderella Story) appeal to young girls and are also labeled "chick flicks". Critics of the term have pointed out that movies aimed specifically at men are not labeled so derisively.

That's open to interpretation, but a chick flick is a film that appeals mainly to the female audience. The movie generally stars a mostly female cast or a strong female central character. The film also plays on strong emotions and may center around the theme of love.

Examples might include (again, some women will disagree on these films being chick flicks, others will agree): Fried Green Tomatoes, Thelma & Louise, Love Story, The Way We Were, Nine to Five, Terms of Endearment, Steel Magnolias, Ghost, Pretty Woman, The Joy Luck Club, The First Wives Club, Jerry Maguire, Titanic, City of Angels, You've got mail, What Women Want, Bridget Jones' Diary, The Wedding Planner, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Chick flicks are usually romantic comedies... which are movies that are high on the romance and low on the comedy. Movies that are cute, sweet, or involve some kind of ridiculous plot inolving two people that would never get together in real life, but magically fall in love, all fall into the chick flick category.

It means that it's a movie made mainly for girls to enjoy. If the theater is full of girls, and the only guys in there are look like they are being forced to watch it; it's a Chick Flick.

chick flick mmmmm something like I'd say Titanic or something. A lot of guys dont like that movie becuz they hate stuff about love and crap. they'd rather watch lots of sex and boobies. (even though there is a scene of nudity in the movie) I'm not a guy tho so yeah....

It's just a movie that appeals only to women, usually about relationships, very little or no action, just drama, most of them will make you cry at some point. Its a movie that girls would rather see with their girl friends, not their boy friends. Although some will try to get their boyfriends to go see it with them, it doesn't work out well.
