When you go into the hospital sometimes the doctors want to see how the baby will handle the stress of delivery. They will give you a little medication to "imitate" (make you have some mild contractions)...the same medication they use to induce labor. This is the new way of doing it.
The old way of doing it was a nipple stimulation. Don't laugh and think I'm being silly. They did do this to get you to have a contraction and see how the baby would react during labor. Sometimes this would actually bring on real labor so that's why they wanted to do it in the hospital.
There are some doctors out there now that will still tell their patients to give it a try when they are actually over their due dates and they know the baby is ready.
Other than this and induction with medication there really isn't much you can do. Walking usually helps when the water has been broken or you have been having light contractions. That can help to increase the intensity of the contractions.
Good luck!

I know what you're going through, I'm pregnant with the 3rd and am afraid of going over for the 3rd time. So I did some research myself, that I'll be trying in a couple of weeks. These are ideas I found. Go for a bumpy car ride. Castor oil, which I personally wouldn't try. Blue and black cohosh, which I've tried before but it didn't work. I would talk to someone into herbs before doing this. Drink cumin seed tea. Fleet enemas? Spicy food if you don't get heartburn (like chilli peppers), I tried hot wings and it didn't work. Nipple Stimulation, put a wet warm towel over nipples and roll nipple through towel until a contraction happens. Do that for an hour, then take a 4 hour break and do it again. Have sex, then elevate your hips for a little bit so semen can coat the cervix. Evening primrose oil, take gel caps orally 3 times a day and insert 2 in vagina at bedtime. Drink raspberry leaf tea. There are pressure points you could try, like the webbing between your hand's thumb and forefinger. Have a doctor or midwife strip your membranes. Other than those I guess the only other option is having the doctor do an in-hospital induction, which I am avoiding. But I would ask to have cytotec or prostoglandin gel before the pitocin. Good luck!

Buy some clary sage essential oil asap.
Add 5 drops of this to a quarter of an eggcup of almond or olive oil.
Pour in warm bath once it has stopped running and have a long bath!
You can also add 5 drops of lavendar oil if you want, it helps you relax.
I guarantee it will bring on labour.
If you get some nosy person at the chemist saying you shouldn't buy essential oils when pregnant, beleive me this is far safer and easier than being induced, and is a well known natural remedy used for hundreds of years.
After terrible 5 day labours and complications with my first two, I did this with my third and also burned the clary sage oil in an oil burner, she was born naturally in about 4 hours, no problems.

Yep sex can work. Apparently that is best for inducing labour! But if that's uncomfortable, try doing something which involves lots of bouncing, jusmping, bumping, etc. I don;t think you can hurt the baby as long as you are careful. Adrive around a small street with lots of speed bumps might so the trick. Or you could try to get on with something that really needs doing or start doing something you always wanted to do. That'll bring it on! You know how these things work, you just get into something and forget about stuff and then everything happens all at once.

I know some people claim that Balsamic vinegar can trigger contractions. But it didn't work for me. I was 2 weeks late and had 3 failed inductions with my first. Some babies can just be so stubborn.
Your doctor has a prostaglandin cream that he can use which will soften your cervix and move things along. There are also some doctors who use a certain kind of seaweed for very tough cases (neither was volunteered in my case and I had to push for it).
Otherwise, lay on your left side, pillow between your knees and drink lots of water. It won't make you go into labor, but it will relax your pelvis and take some of the pressure off your legs.
If you have access to a jacuzzi, you can also try relaxing in there and letting it restore your circulation.

I know how you must feel. TRY THIS IT WORKS I PROMISE I DID IT. I did it and my best friend did it. And we both had our baby the same day we did this procedure. I was due on 1-10 and was sick of being preg. So she said to take 1oz of castor oil and mix it with something you can drown out the taste with. I mixed mine with orange juice. Guzzled it down at 3:00 that afternoon and at 10:00 that night I went into labor and finally had him at 2:00 A.M. Come on now I was 10 days early as well as my friend being 12 days early you can't tell me that it was just luck. I don't think so and my baby as well as my health was absolutely perfect. If you do this I want to know what happens :)

The baby will come when he/she is ready and not before. If looking after your other 2 children is really difficult why did you decide to have a third?

Actually having sex doesn't guarantee labour, however, if you walk around for a good while, or do as the person above suggested (run up and down stairs), then this will be more likely to bring on labour.

I am the father of Nine children. Our second was late so I had my wife get in bed and I put her through some relaxation exercises. (tighten your neck, slowly relax it next tighten your sholders, now relax, etc from head to toe) Then is a soft voice I had her imagine that she was slowly walking into her mind. We talked about things that bothered her and I gave her some advise. then she walked out and I told her to be possitive and the baby would come at 2:00 am. When we finished, we went to sleep. She started labor at 1:00. (she never could follow directions)
Hey it's worth a try.
