Ever heard a horse owner say, "I have an appendix horse"? What they are saying to you is that this horse has Thoroughbred in its bloodlines. Usually quite a lot of the Thoroughbred blood. The use of the word "appendix" was first used in the Thoroughbred stud book around the time of the revolutionary war. The Thoroughbred breeders started a stud reference book. There were a number of cold blooded horses that showed up under the heading appendix in the stud book. This was just a mention of a stud which was bred to a Thoroughbred and not much more. The Thoroughbred breeders stopped letting any other type of horse into the stud book not long after they started the publication. Those were simple times and there were not many rules against outside breeds. Now, only a pure Thoroughbred can register into the Jockey Club or be in the stud book.

A Quarter Horse that has a Thoroughbred parent. The American Quarter Horse Association allows these crosses to be registered as AQHA (American Quarter Horses) but the yellow papers, or appendix papers, indicate the horse has Thoroughbred blood. The reason for making this cross is to produce a quarter horse with more speed for racing. Quarter Horses are the fastest breed - for a quarter of a mile, then they slow down. They are known for their burst of speed in short distances. Thoroughbreds are known for high speeds in longer races - and breeders felt by crossing these breeds they would get the best of both worlds. That's why some quarter horses are short and stocky (foundation conformation) and others are taller, more lean, and used for jumping and racing instead of ranch work or pleasure showing.

Arabians are fine in the winter just make sure that they are properly blanketed and if he is clipped you can even double up on the blankets. maybe an appendix quarter horse? they are fast can be spunky average around 15.2 and have the thouroughbred spirit watered down a bit with QH blood so they are easy keepers. it also really depends on the individual horse and what you want to do with it. if you want to do high level show jumping get a TB. if you want to barrel race get a QH. if you want to do dressage get a hanoverian. if you want an all around horse get an appendix QH, an appy or a good old crossbreed. based on your edit i would say a quarter horse because they love to gallop and are the basic western horse. they are also usually pretty laid back so if you want some spunk get and appendix quarter horse.
