My fish tank temperature is slowly, but surely, increasing. Right now it's at about 84 for freshwater tropical fish (a betta). How do I decrease the temp, and fast?

84 isn't a problem, yet. If it gets any higher than 86, then it's time to take action.

First of all, if he is in a sunny room, you need to either move him or close all the curtains. Sun increases the room's temperature.

Second, consider turning on a fan near him. Air movement should cool him down a bit.

If all else fails, put some ice in a baggie and float it in his tank. Try not to lower the temperature any more than 4 degrees per 12 hours.

Good luck!

Unlike most fish bettas are fine with temps up to 85. (Heck he's most likely loving the higher temps. If it's going beyound that. I'd add a small amount of cool water to the tank. Slowly. Preferably in a zip-lock baggy. (This will cause more gradual changes in temp.) Don't change the temp more than a degree or 2 in a minute, and no more than 5 degrees in a day.

well most betta's, there is no prime temp. most fish do good in temp's of 72 to 85 degreese. if you are useing a heater then what you set it on is fine. most people who own betta's keep them in a very small tank at room temp. or a small bowl and some with plants, like peace lillys.

put some ice in it keep the light off, the temperature arent always accurate they measure the temp in the room not of the water, stick your hand in the water and see if its really that hot, or get a hand thermometer and stick in the water and see what the temp is, if the this is actually floating in the water then ya get some ice in it

turn the heater temperature off until water gets sort of cold to get the fish at room temperature then turn it on again but not so high

You could add cool water (not cold). Also - turn the tempurature down on your heater.
