this is what i'm trying to say. the prisoners should earn something to make them feel that they need to change , so that when they come out in society they want better lifestyles than when they went in. who wants to live in a prison? People, it isn't what you think it is. There is abuse, sexual , mental, physical abuse form inmates as well as prison officials. Would you like those people to come into our world? There are prisoners who take advantage of the schools and workshops, then theres those who just lift weights, do drugs, along with smuggling them in, who don't care about life. Those will still get released out here, so they should be made to enroll in school, to work before they are released. The only reason they should earn money is so we , don't have to pay for them. They only have a limited supply of items that they can purchase, there money has to be put in a trust fund and they are monitored. We don't need more prisons, we need actual rehibilitation.

I'm not sure of the point you are trying to make.

These 'people' are in your world, every day. A criminal is a criminal regardless of where you put him/her. It's programmed in their mind to do what they do. Yes, prisons need more rehab, but people who want to make a lifestyle change do no matter what they are offered.

In states like Florida, prison population is getting out of control because of these 'Tough on crime) acts and 'no tolerence' policies. Where else in the world would you go to prison for 5 years because you had 3-5 Driving on Suspended License charges? Thats the problem, you don't need more prisons I agree, you need new, more flexible sentencing laws.

You people need to take your damn blinders off. 80% of people in prison are there for non-violent crimes, most of which are multiple petty drug charges.

Who wants to live in a prison?

First of all people would rather live somewhere they have 3 hots and a cot and now you want to give them free education. Just because the freedom ain't there wont deter people from secluding themselves to better themselves in the long run.

Education as a rehabilitation will just make crime more attractive because of the benefits outweighing the consequences if you get caught. Granted you can not have someone who's life was already at rock bottom come out of prison a smarter convict but at the same time you can have them no worse for wear if they get caught.

My answer is this-Educating outside the prison won't work if people do not see the equality. Our society should have a forum of communication that is recognized by our government, at every level, where people can see that their voice is being heard. This sense of belonging will only strengthen the individual as he/she realizes his/her harm to another harms all and this will not change because the people who are to loose by equality, white, are not going to give up their status. Especially when you have racial profiling.

Also, I don't pay taxes and I don't need prison. MONEY makes the WORLD go round.

I agree! In fact I'll go a bit further. I think there should be no prisons at all. Forget all notions of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation doesn't work. All you have to do is look at the recidivisim rate.

My solution is to let the punishment fit the crime. For example, if a person is convicted of stealing, cut off the hand that stole.

If a man is convicted of rape, let that offending appendage be cut off as well. Other than that, if a person has committed an offense that is henious enough to warrant his removal from society, let that removal be permanent upon conviction of his first offense. If executions were the punishment for violent crimes, the number of violent criminals would decline, one way or another.

actually a lot of prisons in people do work usually for a couple of dimes an hour to a couple of dollars. the jobs that they do vary from telemarketing, to making airplane parts. i saw a story on it once this factory closed down where they paid employees 25.00 plus dollars an hour so that they could put a fctory in the prison. and charge people 2.50 per hour. crap a lot of prisons make there inmates work, but the jobs they do could also be done by people on the outside. anybody can change if they want to. but they don't want to. they like the lifestyle that put them in prison.

You should become a warden or maybe a legislator so you can change some of these things. You have good ideas, so get to work on making the world (and especially prisons) a better place.

I dont believe that rehabilitaion works, criminals will work the system and say what we want to hear so we believe that they have changed. its not true, especially with hanous crimes. and they are given a chance out, in CA its 3 strikes and then your in for good. I do think that they do need to do more than sit in the jail, we should have them work on the highways in striped suits and chains around their ankles. take their rights away and make them work.

We should be using those tax dollars on ropes for public hangings bullets for firing squads. That is the only form of rehabilitation. Then we could invest in education and protection of the Innocents and victims.

A national death penalty would alleviate some of the prison over crowding as well as lower the crime rate.
