I was in the US Army infantry from 1981 to 1988. I never had any trouble meeting any strong, handsome gay or gay curious fellow soldiers. You just had to be subtle and discrete about it. You wouldn't believe some of the unique and interesting places we had sex at. This was before the "don't ask, don't tell" era. I just never admitted anything and never had any problem. You need to use good judgment because of the situation. So yes, there are plenty of gay men in the military. I have always been very, very proud of my service to the country that I dearly love.

Well, being in the Navy, I can answer based on my experience. Sure there are gays in the military. Most of us don't care. In my experience, the few times that anybody has been kicked out for being gay were a result of a combination of events. The military usually just threw in the gay thing as a side dish. It was kind of like saying "He sexually harassed me by saying that I'd be promoted if I blew him. Oh, and there was also a hostile work environment because he talked about his dates." The military usually had reason to kick those guys (or girls) out, but just wanted to seal the deal by throwing in the gay card. I personally know a few gays and, in my opinion, do just as good a job as the rest of us.

Nearly 20,000 gay men and more than 16,000 lesbians are estimated to be on active duty, representing 2.5 percent of active duty personnel. An estimated 65,000 gay men and lesbians are in uniform when those in the National Guard and reservists are included, or some 2.8 percent of all military personnel.
WASHINGTON, D.C., October 20, 2004—Although the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy requires gay and lesbian service members to remain silent about their sexual orientation, it does not prevent them from enlisting, says a new Urban Institute study.
also there is a website on woman rape in the military.

I can tell you there are more than a few good men in the military, always have been. Sadly in the US military, they have to hide from the very people who want them to fight and die for their "family values". Thankfully, I live in a country where this is not an issue, being gay is no more or less an issue than skin colour or religion.

I haven't been in the military myself, but have known many gay/lesbians who have been, and read in many forums that there are a LOT in the military. But, if you want to stay there, you better adhere to the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
One of these days, hopefully our lame government will change this.
Of course, they sure don't mind sending anyone they know is gay to the front lines to possibly get killed, now do they?

Yeah, gays can join the military, but you have to remember the DADT policy or known as the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy which states that you can't tell people and you can't ask whether someone else is gay otherwise you can get thrown out or discharged from service.

I have a friend who is a lesbian and she is in the navy. I don't know how she does it though. I couldn't closet myself like that all over again. It was hard enough coming out! If you do, good luck, it won't be easy. My Dad did 20 years, the military is awesome and i loved being a navy brat- but the don't ask don't tell policy i think is VERY wrong!

Yes, there are several gay individuals in the military. Some branches tend to have more than others...
It is not forbidden to be gay in the military, just to be actively gay. As long as you dont say you are gay and as long as you are not caught in the act, it is fine ... you are not breaking any laws.

I doubt there are any statistics to back up that fact.
The official policy established under Clinton was 'Don't ask, don't tell.' Which means it's fine as long as you don't tell anybody. And if the Army suspects you are gay, they are not allowed to ask.
If a gay soldier confirms he is gay, then I think they can be involuntarily discharged.
How would we know the numbers if nobody's talking?
