I FEEL YA! I have a daughter whom IS indeed disabled. She was NOT born this way. I was working a 12 hour day and my oldest two daughter's from a previous marriage was with my ex husband for his visitation. He drove head-on into a tractor-trailer! My youngest whom was 3 was in the back-seat and had minor scrapes, bruises and abrasions. However,my oldest whom was 4 was not so lucky! She was in the front passenger seat. She was D.O.A., when the paramedics got to her. They revived her twice in the helicopter. The results from this horrific crash left my daughter with major brain damage, right leg broke in 5 places, left arm fractured in two places, eye damage ,tracheotomy and a feeding tube. She was in a body cast basically from the waste down. Two weeks in ICU and 5 months in REHAB.
I now have SOLE custody of both, and am personally, medically active in my child's life. I constantly get the stares and the snickers, but have grown to learn that type of behavior is how people react when they honestly don't know how to respond or how to ask the appropriate questions.
My daughter is soon to be 12, and she is the apple of my eye. I would lay down my own life, just for her. As well as all of my children. I invite you to correspond with me, as I am a big advocator for people with disabilities. God bless you. Keep up the faith.

I have read through and you have already recieved some really good answers, so I probably can't say anything that hasn't already been said.
But I would like to say, I have a disability too, and I know there will always be someone that just has to make fun of someone because they are different. I do think that society has gotten better about accepting people with disabilities, but it will never be perfect.
I do know that as a child it hurts like hell when someone treats you badly or just differently because you have a disability. But I do have to say I have gotten stronger over the years and the sting is not quite as bad . For me as an adult, what hurts the most now is that I see how my son has to struggle with discrimination.

OK tough one,
Everyone should have a sense of humor you need to be able to laugh at yourself. but there is a difference between humor and being hateful. it would depend on the joke and the purpose. if the joke is meant to be hateful then yes it appalling
also, being a second class citizen is your decision. If you want to be treated like equals, then you must not take special treatment. If you want special treatment then do not expect to be treated the same. all though having a disability is not any ones fault, and I have compassion for anyone that needs help which we all do from time to time.
but it is a two way street if you are disabled and you need special help because of that OK I will do anything in my power to assist you but realize we are not equal you need help from others or special consideration. who can you expect to be considered equal.
but if with having a disability you do not let it define you and ask for no special consideration and fight through life with everyone else then yes you are my equal and dare i say more advanced because you face life's hardships with the masses and play your hand without any special rules.
i believe it is up to you.

I empathize with you because truly there are some ignorant people who are ready to laugh. Currently, I work in that field. And to compare it any of my other jobs, this is the most filling and rewarding. What hurt me the most is whenever they(people) think that someone with a disability do not have a brain. Meaning they cannot think for themselves. This is quite a disturbing myth. I also agree with you that they do have their own share of problems and its because of how society view the word disability/handicapped why that stigma is around until today. I always encouraged my clients to do things for themselves. Such as, dry your hands, wash your face, brush your hair just to give them a sense of independence. Do not feel bitter because of your limitations. We are all limited in different areas of life. Be proud of who you are and show the world that besides being disabled you are intelligent. Cheer up and keep smiling.

I think first off...they should have been taught better as children. Kids learn what they are taught and carry that into adulthood. Adults who make fun are doing so out of ignorance...and the lack of information. People make fun of what they dont know and understand. Its sad that this happens, and unfortunate that you have to deal with it. I know I taught my children to ask questions if its something they dont know....and to not treat a person with a disability any different than you would your brother or sister. I found that for the most part, and if they are able to, then most people with a disability will talk to you about it...they want you to understand..it makes them more comfortable too......maybe someday...people will learn instead of hiding behind the fear of the unknown....Good luck to you. :)

I truly believe that people make fun of what they DON'T understand or what scares them. I don't think some know
what to do. If they wanted to take the time to get to know
the people I am sure their feelings and reactions would be
different.
I use to work at a school for handicapped kids, and this is
my opinion, they are some of the truest people you will know
They won't lie to you or be mean. They are God's creations
just as I am.
As for people that make fun of others I think they have a
disability of ignorance.
Best of Luck to you

I also have a disability and I hate hearing people make fun of the disabled, It just makes me so mad.. I have learned to deal with it but alot of people haven't. I think people should be more considerate and think about other's feelings.

I think they are really ignorant about how hard it is to be disabled. If they knew how much effort a disabled person puts in to just coping with the daily requirements of life, they would be awed, not amused. Feel sorry for them.
