THERE ARE 50 STATES TOTAL. 48 WITH IN THE CON-US AND 2 ADDITIONAL, ALASKA AND HAWAII. THERE IS AN EXCEPTION FOR WASHINGTON D.C. IT IS NOT A STATE NOR IS IT A TERRITORY. IT IS SEPARATE FROM THE REST. THE PEOPLE THERE HAVE NO REPRESENTATION IN CONGRESS AND NO SAY IN NATIONAL MATTERS.
THERE ARE ALSO U.S.TRUST TERRITORY'S, SUCH AS GUAM AND PUERTO RICO. THESE PLACES HAVE REPRESENTATION AND HOLD SEATS IN THE HOUSE, BUT ARE NOT STATES AS OF YET. MAYBE SOMEDAY THEY WILL BE GRANTED STATEHOOD.
