I live in WA, and here people say both "soda" and "pop", with an emphasis on "pop". At restaurants here, we always just say the name of the drink we want; the "coke" thing doesn't apply. If you say you want "coke", you will get coca-cola. I say both "soda" and "pop", alternating back and forth without blinking an eye. With all of the things in the world that are annoying, I don't see why this is even on the radar.

Soda..I think 'pop' is used more to the north and east. Soda is used more in the south. Correct me if I'm wrong. Everyone I know from NC says soda, or just drink. I know people from PA and OH and they say pop.

New Yorkers say soda, South Dakotians say pop. Put it together and you get soda-pop! If I'm lazy it comes out soda. Just my roots I guess.

I used to say pop when I lived in Montana and Texas when I was little, but now I live in NM and I say soda because it sounds cooler than "pop"
