She is the only individual that can lay eggs and generate new colony members. Her chemical signals organize the volony. Ants do not seem to be able to generate a new queen.

Usually there can be more than one Queen Ant. I'm sure if the one Queen dies, then they will find thier way to the other.

The queen ant is the only one who lays eggs, so if she dies there will be no new ant to add to the colony there for it dies off.

The colony doesn't always die. If there is anther colony nearby, they may steal that queen, or try to join. If no queen can be found, then no baby ants are born so they die out, and they have no purpose, no reason to collect food and build tunnels.

HOWEVER, they can feed another ant royal jelly and make that Ant a Queen.

But according to the wikipedia link below this has to be done at the larvae stage.

That's why Ant traps work.. it's too quick and another queens can't be made in time.

Ive heard that when a queen dies the colony disbands and they wander off. Bee's on the other hand take a regular bee and feed her royal jelly that then makes her a queen.

Because when an queen ant knows she is going to die, she decides to take the whole colony with her. She instantly becomes a suicide bomber. Except that ants use pesticide instead. Like gas bombs. It's a good show; you should watch it sometime.
