Well. Most R&B songs aren't fit for a 12 year old. Most involve sex and drugs and usually show the female submissive either by the lyrics or the videos that portray the songs. Also, many R&B songs talk about love or break ups - something I doubt your niece has experienced yet. True, that some people write about things they have no experience of but I don't think your 12 year old niece is interested in boys to the degree of love.

Maybe she can write about a crush? How she likes him from a far but is too scared to talk to him about her feelings?

Or maybe the loss of a pet? And the times she spent with it and how much she loved it and how she misses it.

School could be a good one.

If she moved to another city or state she could talk about that.

Maybe she can talk about female empowerment! How boys are icky and girls can play basketball better than a boy can - or something cute and fun like that. I'm all up for female empowerment.. lol.

Tell her to make a list of things she's interested in, her likes and dislikes and then write a song with one of those topics - usually I find writing about my dislikes is easier and they are easier to be angry at and bash more than writing a sunshine filled essay about what I like.

Diary writing is a great tool also - many songwriters write their songs out of their personal diaries - and anything she writes in there she will know if its appropriate or not for a 12 year old (and its probably typical 12 year old stuff anyway!)

Here's a few:

The struggle a 12 year old faces to figure out who she is relative to what the culture and media wants her to be.

What does it mean to fit into a peer group when an individual has a unique talent her peers don't share.

As a 12 year old starts to notice boys, what is still "strange" about them and what is strangely attractive - the ironies within those seeming contradictions.

Why a 12 year old songwriter wants to be successful - more than just money and fame, but about wanting to say something meaningful and be heard by the world.

What is still wrong with cross-cultural relationships despite all the progress made in civil rights - as seen through the eyes of a 12 year old.

Hope that short list helps a little. Good luck and God bless.

She should concentrate on an area of interest to her. Work from there. I not know, but, from my example I have two Oscar fish and it a male and female, they in love. Very beautiful when they caress.
I swim with you,
In an ocean of blue,
Around we go,
our love as a river.
Flowing and spinning,
I caress my love.
She my woman,
sent from heaven above!
Well, I shot from the hip on this, but, work with what she have and maybe use a Thesaurus for special words. To make a good song, regardless of Style. It can take time. As from my example, I take this and work from there to Hone the song and use a Thesaurus to give it special words so it not be repetitious. Hope this helps.

I doubt many topics fit for R&B would be fit for a 12-year-old, but I may be wrong.

I am a 12 year old girl, trying to write a song for my momma.
Poppa has run off with a girl from the bar.
My momma is pregnant with no money.
What am I going to do.

(The only problem is that there are about 50,000 similar r & b songs just like that already)............

Well, that certainly cuts out getting drunk, crashing cars, and sleeping around...

I suppose she might still be able to sing about hitching rides on trains, and how her dog died.
