In a computer you have random access memory (RAM) in which everything that executes together with the data and some configuration variables needs to be loaded. Nothing can run if it's not in RAM! But when things go wrong (there is an error in the program) the whole system cannot run safely anymore. In such a case the whole content of the memory is saved into a file for later analysis and the system is restarted. That is called a crash and the process of saving the memory contents is called a memory dump. The memory dump is optional (if you don't know how to analyze it, why dump it?). The memory can be dumped manually as well if you want to understand better how a program works for example.
