I know with computer hard drives, everything is magnetic so no information is irretrievable, even if it's been deleted. The only way to get rid of hard drive data is to burn or otherwise destroy the hard drive.

So, if you have an answering machine with a tape that's based on magnetism, it's very likely that somehow a crime lab or specialist could retrieve that data.
