No. Its divisive and tells people of color you cant compete with whitey on a equal footing. It says you need help to compete farily. I know beacause my wife is hispanic and beat me by 2 points every single time we interviewed for the same Ca state jobs .To lose by 2 points on all the tests was not an accident. She was quite insulted because she gave the same answers I did. This was back in the early 90s when the LAFD said no white men need apply. Can you imagine what would have happened if it listed any color other than white.Do we need to mend it no , end it .Stop this official race baiting .Let the most qualified get the job.

It is hard to say, while Affirmative Action helps in some ways it hurts in others. While it helps people to get hired that are of a minority, it has loop holes.
1. Companies are not required to hire for higher level positions, so they can hire just the right number of people to work only lower level entry jobs.
2. If the company hires a Dominican Woman, they have just filled 3 requirements under the law, a woman, Latino, non-white. That means two less jobs need to be filled.
On a social level the need for Affirmative Action means that things have not really changed that much at all.

Yes. Although I believe that the vast majority of corporation hire based on experience and skill, there are still a number of businesses located in the deep South or redneck, hillbilly towns where racist views still have an impact on hiring. And aside from the hiring of blacks, there are still a large number of corporation that still discriminate against women, especially in upper tier executive positions.

So Yes, unfortunately. Affirmative action is still needed and anyone who suggests otherwise has not done the appropriate research to support such a claim because the statistics still show the need.

I am of two minds for this ...

On one hand, if two QUALIFIED individuals applied for the same job, one was disadvantaged and other not ... I would lean towards hiring the disadvantaged person.

However, I disgree with Affirmative Action when education and qualifications take a back seat to race, gender or whatever. I've seen it in action here in Ontario where very well educated workers were given the short end of the stick, while high school drop-outs of disadvantaged classes were given well-paid jobs. I think that turned my stomach quite a bit.

Personally I think its an insult to everyone of all races of either sex who have worked and studied hard to get where they are. I wouldn't fee good about a job knowing the only reason I got it was because I fit a quota. Affirmative action had its place 30+ years ago. I think like many old programs that are past their prime it should be retired. It's programs like this that keep racism alive and breathing.

tough question....i'll say yes as long as there is discrimination and unfairness....but if we could get over the prejudices and discrimination then we would be able to eliminate the prctice of affirmative action but as long as there are groups who suffer for they race or sexual orientation or ethnicity or whatever then we must protect them and let them know that they have protected rights and it is the least we can do!!!

by reading some of the above comments some of the respondents would like a equal access in an unequal society...i mean pregnant women and old ladies get a protected right to park closer at the mall, according to them they should have to find a parking space like the rest of us...which would be "fair" but because of their condition we (society) say it's ok for them to park closer so they won't have to walk as far...preference isn't always bad or intrusive it's just the least we can do for those groups of people who face challenges and special circumstances!!!

No, I don't believe that we do. When it was first devised it served a great purpose because many people were being discriminated against because of their race/national origin. In my experience it has been a form of "reverse" discrimination. I know in the state that I live in, certain groups get jobs with the local government, even if they are way less qualified because they are considered a minority. I think the people that believe in it should stand up for their rights and be against it as well. I wouldn't be comfortable getting a job because of my race, I would want to get a job because of my abilities and skills. In my opinon, it's an excuse that many people use for being lazy and uneduacted.

Yes we do!

As long as the rich have it, so shouldn't the poor!!

How else do you think Bush got into Yale, and then was admitted to Harvard Business with a C-?? It wasn't because of his grades!!!! Do you think that most people could even get into Harvard, much less with a C- average.

Affirmative action for the Rich!! They take up seats also!!

If it were NOT for affirmative action, there would be more unqualified workers homeless. No, we don't need, or have to have it, but the government in its infinite wisdom deem that it is necessary. If private business were run like government, we would be bankrupt in no time.
