personally i manage a small restr. on the west end of town and i wait tables also, i get fantastic tips but most of my regulars know me by name and i know them also by name, and what they drink and eat each time, however i cant say the same for my staff, they always call in at the last minute are never early but always late and for some reason they all manage to get their on payday before i am even there...

I've never been a waitress, but I've ate out A-LOT. I really respect what they do and when we get a good one, I try to tip really well. As I understand, a lot of waiter/waitress' are students and I'm sure they could use good tips. I try to over look if I feel they are just having a bad day, but can tell if they really should try a different kind of job.
They are probably hard to get (hire or when dining) overall the same as getting good customer service anywhere.

I am a waitress, but I agree with you completely. I bend over backwards to make my customers' experience the best possible. But, I've noticed that when I go out to eat, I'm not getting very good service. I hear my coworkers complain about not making enough money in tips, but I do very well. I think it's just because they have gotten lazy and expect to get paid for nothing.

It's not just you! They are either snotty and uninformed about the menu and expect a great tip for zero service or they are constantly at your side to the point where you can't enjoy the food and conversation of the company your with.
