Clinton Portis... people forget Portis came in the league as a 20year old rookie for the Broncos, and has been having over 1, 500 yards rushing. That the Emmit Smith record rushing. Yea Portis doesnt have as many TDS as LT, LJ or Shaun. But he has alot of years left, a new improved offense. And could just be the next Running Back to challenge Emmits record.

Well i think there are several runnign backs that have a good shot at breaking the record. The best one is probally going to be LT. The next best is Shaun Alexander. I am not going to talk up Larry johnson too much yet because he has not yet played a whoel season with the cheifs. Larry should do pretty well this year by looking at the Chiefs schedule. The other guy that always comes to mind is Clinton Portis. He is a very good running back but i am not sure he can really go balls to the wall in washington due to Joe gibb's Run and gun west coast offense. So yeah my guess at this point in the game is LT.

There's no way to know that right now. Superstar RB's can run for 8 years and then suffer an injury that ends it. Part of what makes Emmmitt's record so incredible is the durability it required. It will stand for quite a while. I think Curtis Martin is the next closest and he's almost done. More than great moves or spectacular seasons, it's about durability and the ability to play at a high enough level that your team or another team sees you as an every-down starting RB....THAT'S the challenge.

Either Shaun Alexander, L.T., or Cincy"s Rudy Johnson have
good chances of breaking Emmitt's record.
My 1st pick would be Shaun Alexander.
If the Bengals go to a running attack because of Q.B. Palmer's
injury status than the Darkhorse Rudy might tear up the gridiron
with both speed and power--Bengals Offensive Line can open
up the holes for Johnson (they can also pass protect)!!

There are a few but its hard to judge this early because of injury and stuff of that nature. LT would be a possibility along with Alexander. Larry Johnson might not because he was on the bench for a few years. Also, maybe Ronnie Brown or Carnell Williams because they both started as rookies on running teams and if they stay healthy could rack up big numbers.

Ladainian Tomlinson will challenge him at the record. He is the premier, proven back in the league right now. Shaun Alexander might do it as well.
