They normally get put up for a few hours until people stop answering them. It says that you have 24 hours and then you can pick your best answer. But people ask questions every second, your question just keeps getting pushed down and down until people don't know it's there.

after 24 hours you can choose a best answer but if you don't for a while it will go into voting and other people will vote for the best answer cuz questions stay posted for weeks and they are still open questions

why is this in the celebrity section???, the asker can wait as long as they choose to before the choose a best answer, but it has to be over 24 hours.
