Why do we diet? Ladies, gentlemen isn't it about looking better than other women, or men? Honestly. Think about it. You think you're fat, usually because you notice that the girls/guys in school, or in the office, or in the magazine or on TV are skinnier or buffer than you. So you go on a diet. Doomed to failure. Why? Think about this. Athletes don't tell themselves what crappy players they are to improve their proformance. What do we do when we diet? We sit around telling ourselves how fat we are. We constantly berate ourselves for anything short of perfection. So what do we do about this?

bake a pie

no really, it's very stress-reducing

and instead of eating it, you WALK to the local homeless shelter and donate it... then, oh no!!! a squirrel steals it from you on the way there! so you spend an hour climbing and running, trying to get your pie back.

but unfortunately, the squirrel sneakily gave the pie to his friends who... dun dun DUN, ate it. so you go (walk again) home and remake a pie... this time two, just in case. when you finally get to the homeless shelter, wonder of wonders, there is a gorgeous guy/girl who starts checking you out, totally falling for your kindness with TWO pies for the homeless. and the running, etc. was so good that you feel and look good (for a sweaty person...).

so anyways, you repeat this process throughout the next few years, eventually losing weight and gaining a lover.

yeah!!

We diet because we are told to, because diets cost money. We also do it because that is what is perceived as attractive.

Its really hard to explain but its kind of the inner workings of popular culture. Diet is a fad, it costs money to go on some of these diets and the money goes to the people who invent the diet. Celebrities endorse these diets and they end up selling because of this type of advertising.. Its fairly interesting, but there are some diet 'experts' that get paid millions of dollars a year.

Another thing is that we live in a consumer society. We just cant help but consume. So when we overconsume with fast food and snacks we in turn overconsume with diets and excercise fads.

I dont think the above explaination helps much, I didnt really explain why we do it I just kind of went full circle. So I am going to try to redeem myself:

Personally, I think we do it because its popular, we are a consumer society and we are socialized (through media) to look like a pop tart (pop culture icon, not the toaster pastry.)

I don't. I try to live a healthy lifestyle, food included, but that doesn't mean I always skip dessert or don't eat orange food, or whatever the fad is right now.

well sometimes we excesses to maintain or improve health, or to actually look better so we can meet better looking people.

Athletes make their living on how well they perform so they naturally work to keep their bodies finely tuned to maximize their performance.
