are we going to have the second ice age within fifty years

No way! With global warming, I don't think there ever will be one again.

See "An Inconvenient Truth" for the best analysis of global warming and how the planet is going to be and stuff. I haven't seen it yet, but I hear it's fantastic and really shows what we're doing to our planet.

As a geologist, I believe I can say with reasonable certainty...No.

However, according to the most recent research, we are still in the Ice Age, passing through what is called an Interglacial Period...a warm spell, so to speak (there have been several of these before breaking the Ice Age into several periods of glaciation). The data suggests that just before all of the BIG nose dives back into a glacial period, the temperatures began to rise abruptly at first, then crashed later on. So, global warming seems to always precede a global glacial freeze.

So, we may well go into another full-out glacial period, but it may be 100s or even a few 1000 years yet. Current trends in global warming have confused this issue. The unknown thing is: Has our impact on global temperatures changed the cycle, or has it just sped things up? Researchers are working on this now.

George Bush had nothing to do with it...but I wouldn't put it past that fruit-cake in North Korea to have given it a try (wink).

Well, we are still in an ice age. The real definition of an ice age is continental glaciation; this is still found in Antartica and Greenland. So, if your question is "will we cool down in 50 years" I'd say no, mainly because temperatures have reached 2000 yeah highs and CO2 levels are at 1/2 million year highs. Look up the global warming "hockeystick". This data shows a clear trend of increasing temperatures since the industrial revolution.

Nope, not within 50 years. For an ice age to happen, it is believed that the polar ice caps must melt to make more water available to form the ice (or glaciers). So, as counterintuitive as it might seem, an ice age could be one of the unforseen consequences of current global warming. This, however, will take a long time (thousands of years) to happen.

We are in an interglacial period, the likelihood of another ice age in geologic times is 100% in the next 50-10000 years near zero.

Our current solar cycle is in a warming phase. It has nothing to do with the schizophrenic Al Gore idiotic junk science rantings.

Assumptions made by people with no scientific background and to push a movie or book based on falsehoods is an effort of the global leftists to scare people into some type of power submission..

I'd recommend a Michael Crichton book. State of Fear admits it is fiction but much of the information in the book is based on true science.

we are definitly in a warming cycle . Sooner or later we will have an ice age you can bet on it . About 1327 we began a mini ice age that forced the vikings out of greenland and brought about growing grains in Europe for beer instead of wine , because grapes died off. Many people died as a result of the mini ice age due to starvation.

not within 50 years, but certainly we will have one again.

as for coming out of an ice age, its true, but a new part of the cycle has begun. the glaciers are melting. global warming is a cycle, if were not in an ice age, we're coming out of one or going into one. there's not much room for staying stable in the climate.

Second ice age? There have been 7 ice ages that we now know of but I wouldnt be too worried....you wont see it in 50 years....

Back in the 50s, before people started talking about global warming, scientists announced that we are actually in an ice age and it's ending.
Now it's all "global warming" and we're causing it. Funny how things change.

depends on how you define ice age

the earth still has ice caps so you could say that we are still in an ice age though probably at the end of it
