Although many people say it is Leeuwenhoek, because he invented and experimented with the microscope I'd have to say the right answer is Louis Pasteur because he set the foundation for microbiology and modern medicine. He discovered ways to minimize the spreading of disease by microbes, experimented with immunization, revealed the world of viruses by studying rabies and developed the process of pasteurization to eliminate some harmful microbes from food.
