When you have a messy room in your house, basement in my case, any pointers on how to "start" to get organized?

Any busy people out there ever hired a maid? How much is too much for them?

Don't try to do it all at once. Break it down into smaller tasks you can finish in increments. Stand at the doorway to the room and start with what is right next to you, and work your way around the room. For instance, if the door opens to the right, turn to your left and start working there. Start with decluttering. If it's broken or ruined, either fix it or throw it away. If it's something that is still in serviceable condition but you don't need it, give it to Goodwill or some other charity that can use it. If it belongs somewhere else, put it in a box so you can go put everything up where it belongs when the box gets full.

Make separate piles of things you want to keep, things to throw away, and things to donate.
The things you want to keep, need to be put away in the room that they will be used. Get rid of the other things as soon as possible to have your room looking clean and organized in no time at all.

The way I try to get organized is to group or make piles of similar items and then sort through those individual piles. Before you know it, your mess is cleaned up!

I second the suggestion for FlyLady! I love her! Even if you don't follow her stuff to the T, you can still benefit from her "flywashing."

Everyday clean out one drawer, closet or cabinet. Put things together that belong together; e.g. linens, tools, cutlery, etc.
